02What happened, and where it sits

MediaLab.AI, Inc. received an ICO monetary penalty on 4 February 2026. The ICO issues a monetary penalty notice setting out the contravention and the sum payable.

The penalty is £247,590. That is the 11th largest of the 44 penalties on this register with a published figure and the 4th largest of the 8 recorded in 2026. UK GDPR penalties are capped at £17.5 million or 4% of total worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher.

Counted from the oldest entry forward, this is the 200th of 216 actions on the register and the 6th of 7 in Online technology and telecoms. The ICO publishes one document for this action, 1.2 MB in total: "MediaLab.AI, Inc. monetary penalty notice". It is the authority for everything on this page.

03The ICO's own account

£247,590 penalty imposed on MediaLab.AI, Inc. in respect of infringements of Articles 5(1)(a), 6, 8 and 35 UK GDPR. MediaLab operated the Imgur social media platform in the UK prior to 30 September 2025 and allowed children under the age of 13 to access the platform, purportedly subject to a requirement for parental supervision and whilst claiming to rely on the Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR (consent) lawful basis. However, MediaLab had no means of determining the age of its users and thus no means of ensuring that it obtained parental consent in respect of users under the age of 13, as required by Article 8 UK GDPR due to the fact that MediaLab offered infrormation society services (i.e. the Imgur platform) directly to children in the UK purportedly on the basis of consent. Therefore, MediaLab did not have a valid lawful basis for processing the personal data of children under the age of 13 and thus processed their personal data unlawfully. In addition, MediaLab failed to carry out a DPIA prior to engaging in a form of high risk processing, specifically, processing the personal data of children under the age of 18 where it intended to offer online services to those children, placing MediaLab in breach of Article 35(1) UK GDPR. The period of infringement began on 27 September 2021, when MediaLab acquired Imgur, Inc. and continued until 30 September 2025, when MediaLab implemented a geo-block which prevents individuals in the UK from accessing the Imgur platform. The penalty was reduced from the £393,000 proposed in the NOI dated 10 September 2025 following consideration of MediaLab's representations and updated financial information.

GDPRFine.com is an independent tracker of ICO enforcement. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Information Commissioner's Office, and it uses no ICO branding. Where the ICO's own wording is reproduced it is quoted and attributed; everything else on these pages is our own summary of the published record.

The ICO's register held 222 entries on that date. 6 of them are prosecutions of named individuals, with ages and home towns in the ICO's own summary. This tracker indexes organisations, so those 6 are excluded and every count on these pages is out of 216. They remain on the ICO's own register.

An entry says what the Commissioner did on the date shown. It is not a statement about the organisation today, and the ICO can amend or remove a register entry at any time. Amounts and provisions are as published by the ICO; where the published notice does not state a figure or name a provision, these pages say so rather than filling the gap.
